If you haven't heard the story of Constance Miller, she wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom.
I never went to my prom. I didn't particularly want to go. But it's what the adults did in this situation that makes me want to kick something. It's just wrong.
I don't sent emails advocating actions, but I do sometimes post about such things (as you guys already know). So here's the text from the email that HRC suggests we send around. Your option to skip, your option to read, your option to act or abstain.
( It's like a scene from Animal House only for real, and it's ugly. )

I went looking for information after reading amonitrate's in progress series of essays (Intro here), though it was Essay 2 that really put me on the hunt for this). What I came up with isn't really a true essay on my part, rather a series of quotes and my own insertions in reaction to them. However I will provide a brief explanation of what I went looking for and why.
( No, it's my fault. All I'm saying is that, if we're gonna do this, we have to do it different, we can't just fall into the same rut. )

I've been reading here and there in Supernatural meta and possibly journal entries or comments about Supernatural and Erik breaking the fourth wall, specifically in episodes like The Monster at the End of This Book and others, where the Supernatural books are referenced, along with, and particularly because of the use of fans of the books.
Most recently, karenmiller posted (in her journal, but linked to from spn_heavymeta) about her unhappiness and dissatisfaction with Season 5.
Apart from the given that every viewer is supremely entitled to their own reactions and opinions about this or any other TV series (or movie or book etc.), one of the hooks on which she seemed to be hanging her unhappiness was this assertion about the breaking of the fourth wall.
In her post, she says, "You're probably familiar with the theatre term 'the fourth wall'. It's another way of discussing the suspension of disbelief, or the fictional world bubble. As observers of the story, we peer in through this invisible 'wall' and watch the story unfold as though we were flies on that wall, privy to the reality playing out before us, never directly involved in the action, always invisible ourselves. That's the general construction of dramatic fiction. It's played for real, it's played for keeps, and we the audience are not an active part of the narrative. We observe it and respond to it, we do not play a role in it."
Now, to be frank, I disagreed with nearly everything she had to say about the show, but with the understanding that what one person doesn't like, another may.
However the repeated use of the term 'breaking the fourth wall' in this context, as it has come up before and no doubt will again has been nagging at me. The use of the term and concept in these discussions isn't accurate.
Plain language: Kripke and Supernatural have never broken the fourth wall.
As a person with theatrical background, I should have realized the inaccuracy sooner - the "Fourth Wall" is a theatrical term.
In a traditional stage, there are three sides - the backstage wall, and the left and right stage walls or the wings, which are sometimes treated as if there were visible walls there, even when there are no flats to represent them.
The Fourth Wall is the side that faces the audience, framed by the proscenium arch.
When this Fourth Wall is treated as if it were a solid, and the audience ignored, it may be considered an aid to the willing suspension of disbelief, but it is far from the only factor upon which that suspension rests.
When a character in a play (or movie, etc.) turns and addresses the audience, after the fourth wall has been established, it's referred to as an 'aside'. This is a technique both in drama and fiction.
This is what is required to break the fourth wall.
To equate the use of the Supernatural books and their writer and fans with any character in the series turning to directly address the camera and specifically, the television audience of the CW series Supernatural (as opposed to say, Ed or Harry talking to the Ghostfacers audience), is stretching the concept until it breaks. In other words, it's inaccurate. It's wrong.
The inclusion of a fictional book fandom and any similarities to the real show's fandom is simply not breaking the fourth wall. It may have the feel of parody, it may slide over into satire, and it may make some audience members uncomfortable, but it's isn't breaking the fourth wall.

I don't know what the 'incident' was since as usual, I'm out of the loop (anyone want to enlighten me?), but in response to it, a very cool post about a little love and appreciation for fandom friends by too_rational. A little sanity and sweetness goes a long way.
My own relationship with Spn fandom as a body is passive-aggressive at the best of times, but through it I have indeed meet the awesomest folks whom I otherwise would not have. I've even been allowed to friend some of you! :D ♥

Linked to by others, Eric Kripke interview on USA Today - he seems quite positive about the possibility of a sixth season. Naysayers, hush up!
